A post office in a church

Last week I had an extremely successful meeting with Fr Andrew, who is the Rector at St James’ Church or The Sherriff Centre, as it is also known, in West Hampstead, London.

At the end of 2013, a tweet from a local post office signaled a new chapter for St James’. The post office was looking for a new space and St James’ made the decision to host this business within the main church space. As a result, a project manager was taken on board, initially on a freelance basis, and developed a highly effective business plan, which later resulted in a café space and a soft play area for families. The church has flourished as a result of this redevelopment, drawing many local families and also a steady income stream, and in turn creating new jobs.

Fr Andrew hopes to include even more scope for event programming in the future within the church space. The church service has suffered minimal disruption, and this move has meant that there will be an increasing new use of the space for a diverse community.
